Our goal at the UCF is to connect young adults who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis. Young Adult Cancer Support (YACS) creates local communities of young adults committed to making a difference in the young adult cancer fight. YACS provides opportunities for young adults to connect through formal support groups as well as social and volunteer opportunities. The UCF currently has three YACS groups; Baltimore, DC, and College Park. Each YACS group is unique in nature regarding its participants, location and vision. Although different, the three YACS groups all have the same overall mission – to support young adults impacted by a cancer diagnosis.
In 2010 the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults re-launched YACS DC, a support group founded by two amazing young adult cancer survivors. As a program of the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, YACS DC enables young adults affected by cancer living in the Washington, DC metro area to connect, share experiences, give and receive support. YACS DC is sponsored by the George Washington Cancer Institute. In addition to monthly facilitated support group meetings, YACS DC will offer a variety of social networking opportunities including happy hours, visits to sporting events, movies and local hospitals.
Unity is strength – By working together, these young adults will find the most effective means of raising awareness, supporting each other and effecting positive change for young adults with cancer.
The next YACS DC meeting will be held ton June 23rd from 6-8 pm at Buffalo Billiards in Washington D.C. If you’re in the DC area come by and join us for some great conversation about resources! There are countless opportunities to get involved in the UCF this summer! Come out and find out all the cool things that are going on! I hope to see you there!!!
