When I started at the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults about 4 years ago, one of my first projects was to work with Kelly Lance in our office to help build what is now TEAM FIGHT. Needless to say we had a vision. We would recruit our friends, family and anyone else that would listen to join the TEAM, wear bright yellow clothing and spread AWARENESS for a cause that is near and dear to our hearts. Young Adults affected by cancer should NOT be alone in the journey through a cancer diagnosis. Plain and Simple and UCF was going to build a little army and make a difference.
So I will answer some questions I have received over the last couple of years:
1. Why Yellow: SIMPLE….Yellow is bright and we wanted to get noticed
2. Why the name TEAM FIGHT: The name, logo and look were fun, active and had a call to action. “Wanna Fight”?
3. Who FIGHTS? People FIGHT. Men and women of all shapes and sizes, all athletic abilities that CARE! We have been able to attract people that want to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
4. The best part about TEAM FIGHT: The Stories that are shared by participants and people we come into contact with. The passion, the emotion are truly life altering!
As these four years have progressed and TEAM FIGHT has expanded and enhanced the lives of so many, I am very thankful for the efforts of so many. The number is about 1,000 so far and growing. Walk, run, do a triathlon, do anything just get involved.
Last week it hit me like a ton of bricks as TEAM FIGHT was recognized and quoted in Triathlete Magazine in an article by our good friend Sarah Wassner Flynn. When she told me she wanted to interview me months back, I had no idea the impact this could have. This was truly the vision when Kelly, Brock and I sat in the conference room and discussed what TEAM FIGHT was to be. It means the world to me, the ULMAN CANCER FUND and the 70,000 young adults that are diagnosed with cancer each year.
So I ask you all….
