I shared before that I am currently doing a year of service with Volunteer Maryland which is a program based out of the Governors Office in Maryland. Can’t remember what Volunteer Maryland is? No worries, here is a little refresher.
Volunteer Maryland is a branch of AmeriCorps that trains and connects individuals with non profits to help them expand their volunteer programs. As of a few weeks ago, I officially passed the half way point of my year. I have been apart of some amazing events and have met some extraordinary people through UCF and Volunteer Maryland.
I wanted to talk about the other aspect of my job this week which is AmeriCorps. Yesterday I went to a committee meeting to help plan Destination AmeriCorps. Destination AmeriCorps kicks off National AmeriCorps Week. National AmeriCorps Week is a recruitment and recognition event designed to bring more people into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their powerful impact and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible.
Planning any big event is hard work and Destination AmeriCorps is a large event for the entire state. The two regional coordinators at Volunteer Maryland set up committees to help with getting the preparations, donations and decorations for the event. I signed up to be on the decorations committee (I am a closet craft lover).
Our job yesterday was to come up with themes for the large rooms at the event and to then figure out how to decorate them. The main theme is travel, which is an awesome topic because so many different things can be done to represent travel.
This year, we are traveling through well-known classic stories but making them our own through artist interpretations! Some ideas that were thrown around were the Wizard of Oz, Indiana Jones, and Oh! The Places You Will Go. I can’t wait to get started making the decorations and planning questions for a jeopardy game.
The main topics for the event will be networking with AmeriCorps alums and life after AmeriCorps. I am looking forward to learning from past alums and having the opportunity to pick their brains about what to do after the year is over. I will post pictures of our creations once we have some finished products. I am looking forward to being apart of making Destination AmeriCorps a successful event!
